Kate was just one and very sick.  Too young to talk, too young to ask why she was in the emergency room, too young to see the shock in her parents’ faces, too young to understand the diagnoses: type 1 diabetes, too young to understand “there is no cure.”  Too young to feel any hope when the doctors said, maybe, in about a decade, we’ll hear about a potential cure.   That was January 2, 1992. In 2002, while driving past the High Sierra and Mount Whitney and hearing her Dad say “Someday I’ll climb Whitney,”  Kate suggested: “Why don’t you do a hike-a-thon for diabetes.”   And, to mark the end of that decade since her diagnosis, we launched Kiss the Sky to Conquer Diabetes with a simple thought: “Keep climbing until we Conquer Diabetes!” In the summer of 2002, the KTS climbing team reached the summit Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States, and raised over $60,000 to help find a cure.
